Ingredients
- 1 1/2 fl oz blanco tequila about 45 ml
- 3/4 fl oz orange liqueur such as triple sec; about 22 ml
- 3/4 fl oz fresh lime juice about 22 ml
- 1 cup ice cubes for shaking, plus fresh ice for serving
- 1 lime wheel for garnish
- 1 teaspoon coarse salt optional, on a plate for a half-rim; most remains unused
Equipment
- Jigger
- Citrus juicer
- Cocktail shaker
- Cocktail strainer
- Rocks glass
Instructions
- If using salt, rub a cut lime around the outside of half the rim of a rocks glass. Dip that edge lightly into coarse salt, keeping salt out of the glass. Fill the glass with fresh ice.
- Add tequila, orange liqueur and fresh lime juice to a cocktail shaker. Add about 1 cup of ice, close securely, and shake for 10–15 seconds until the shaker feels very cold.
- Strain over the fresh ice in the prepared glass. Garnish with a lime wheel and serve immediately. The base recipe is deliberately tart; optional sweetener changes the flavor and estimated calories.

Notes
Video credit: the International Bartenders Association links this margarita demonstration. It illustrates the tequila, orange liqueur and citrus technique; ratios and serving glass may differ from this compact on-the-rocks version. Estimated 200 kcal uses NIAAA averages for 1.5 fl oz tequila (about 98 kcal), 0.75 fl oz orange liqueur (about 94 kcal) and a small lime-juice allowance; no added syrup. Actual labels differ. Salt-rim sodium is variable and is not estimated. Illustrative cost basis: US$25/750 ml tequila, US$30/750 ml orange liqueur and about US$0.60 for lime and salt, allocated to recipe quantities. Alcohol is for adults of legal drinking age; avoid it during pregnancy, before driving or with interacting medicines.
