Ingredients

  • 120 ml heavy cream 1/2 US cup; cold, about 36% fat
  • 60 ml whole milk 1/4 US cup; cold
  • 15 ml pure maple syrup 1 tablespoon, about 20 g
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Equipment

  • Handheld milk frother
  • Tall 500 ml or larger jug
  • Measuring jug and spoons

Instructions

  1. Use cream and milk straight from the refrigerator. Put them in a tall jug with the maple syrup and vanilla. Stir to combine; the jug should be less than half full so the mixture has room to expand.
  2. Submerge the frother head before switching it on. Froth in short bursts for roughly 20–40 seconds, moving just below the surface, until fine bubbles form and the mixture thickens slightly. Stop while it still flows from a spoon in a soft ribbon; do not whip to stiff peaks.
  3. Let very large surface bubbles settle for about 15 seconds. Divide the entire batch into four equal toppings and spoon onto cold drinks. Serve immediately. Coffee, tea, ice and any additional drink sweeteners are not included in this recipe.

Notes

Texture: Brand and frother strength affect the time. The target is fine, pourable foam. If mildly too thick, loosen with a little cold milk; added milk changes the yield and nutrition.
Storage and allergens: Contains milk. Keep an unfrothed covered base at 40°F/4°C or below for up to 24 hours; froth only what you will use. The foam is best served immediately and is not expected to hold its volume overnight. Do not leave dairy at room temperature for more than two hours, or one hour above 90°F/32°C.
Estimated nutrition: One quarter batch, topping only, excluding coffee and ice. Rounded from generic composition values: cream about 408 kcal + milk 37 + maple syrup 52 + vanilla 6 = about 503 kcal per batch, divided by four. Brands and aeration vary; this is not a laboratory analysis.
Estimated cost: Illustrative US ingredient-portion assumptions, not a live price quote: cream $0.90 + milk $0.05 + maple $0.20 + vanilla $0.10 = $1.25 per batch; $1.25 ÷ 4 ≈ $0.31 per topping. Serving drinks are excluded.
Video: Buttered Side Up, Starbucks Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Foam at Home 4 Ways!, originally published September 16, 2021. The video demonstrates frothing methods and several flavors. This formulation uses a 2:1 cream-to-milk ratio and less maple per portion than its sweet-cream version, without salt, caramel or pumpkin. Use the visual texture cues with the measurements above.
